Introduction
From the outset we need to call out and cheer the great work and efforts of many health researchers, healthcare professionals and those activists whose efforts is bringing about a rising awareness of the connection between what we eat and how we live with how well and how long we live. It has been these pioneers who have confronted the massive commercial interests and cultural ignorance which has moved the plant based diet from a subject of derision to a growing recognition that this is the key to solving some of society’s most troubling and perplexing health conditions. It is this movement that holds the promise of not only saving the domestic health care system from what seems to be an inevitable meltdown but for the individual saving their lives from radical and less effective medical interventions and helping them re-discover a wellness that they may have thought was gone forever.
Our goal here is provide a model that would be available to health educators and health practitioners which illustrates the lifespan and the impact of the Standard American Diet (SAD) and lifestyle on the arch of a lifetime. We wanted the model to illustrate that there is another way to live where the quality of life can be recovered and extended to near the end of life. That the last half of life can be as full and rewarding as possible, and finally that the body’s natural ability to heal itself if only we would stop repeatedly injuring our self by our diet and lifestyle.
- The HealthZoneLife model is a holistic approach to health and wellness that focuses on achieving optimal physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
- It is based on the belief that true health is not just the absence of disease, but a state of complete physical, emotional, and spiritual harmony.
- This model provides a comprehensive framework for individuals to take charge of their health and wellness, and to lead a fulfilling and purposeful life.
Slide 2: The HealthZoneLife Model – Overview
- The HealthZoneLife model consists of four interrelated zones:
- Physical Zone
- Emotional Zone
- Nutritional Zone
- Spiritual Zone
- Each of these zones is critical for achieving optimal health and wellness, and they are interconnected and dependent on each other.
Health is the New Wealth – Having a life feeling well and much lower risks.
What Is The HealthZone
The HealthZone Model
The HealthZone Model reflects the dynamic relationship of lifestyle and the various levels of health and well being. It reflects the initial normal level of optimal health (Green Zone) and the impact of various lifestyle choices over time to the individual. This model is meant as tool to help professionals and individual make better choices for their lives. The human body is constantly in the process of healing itself from the damage caused by living in an unhealthy manner. All we need to do is to provide the right ( nutritional, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connections) environment for this healing to take place.
In the model there are five levels of health on a continuum from The Green Zone: Optimal Health to The Black Zone:Chronic Disease with End Organ Complications. Most people are born into the Green Zone and are unaware of the impact of the lifestyle and dietary factors of the culture and environment that they live and participate in. For the first 20 years (in the United States) the effects of the damage cause by the Standard American Diet (SAD) are not readily apparent to the individual due to the granularity of the change which is so subtle that the downward impacts are not perceived. Young person is unaware that the damage is occurring, no alarms are sounding and they make no changes in their lifestyle. The result of all this to most Americans is a decent from well being into chronic disease and an early death. We are literally killing ourselves and those we love with our diet and lifestyle as evidenced by every measure available today. The culture reinforces the toxic dietary and lifestyle that they have been operationally conditioned to follow through massive disinformation in the media, and by an almost total lack of readily available information in the culture. Additionally multiple conflicts of interest in governmental action has also confused the issue by subsidizing toxic foods served in the public schools and through previous publication of bad dietary guidance and advice.
The good news is that things are changing… and no matter where you are on the downward slope on the model you can recover you health for the most part if you give your body a chance to heal itself. By following a prescription of a few significant steps you can achieve a state of wellness that you may have thought was long gone.
Rx :
1. Adopt a Plant Based Diet
2. Walk 10,000 steps everyday (and measure it with a pedometer)
3. Get enough sleep
4. Practice Stress Reduction
5. Do some strength building exercises or weight training
6. Maintain close relationships with family, friends to provide emotional support
The objective here is to go Back to Green as the normal zone for your health.
The Green Zone ( OPTIMAL)
High Functioning Living: Thriving
Sense of well being
Balance in physical, mental, emotional realms
Plays sports, running, active without difficulty
All bodily functions act optimally
The Yellow Zone ( ACCEPTABLE)
Acceptable but sub-optimal overall health
Overweight levels
Generally without symptoms but higher need for recovery from activity
Generally well but higher incidence of need for over-the-counter medications
Some difficulty doing vigorous exercise including walking up stairs and steep hills
The Red Zone ( PRE-DISEASE)
Obese weight levels
Pre-Diabetes, Pre-Hypertension, Atherosclerosis, Sleep Apnea, Osteoarthritis,
Metabolic syndrome diagnosis
The principal symptom of metabolic syndrome is central obesity (also known as visceral adiposity, male-pattern or apple-shaped adiposity), overweight with adipose tissue accumulation mainly around the waist and trunk.[4]
Other signs of metabolic syndrome include: High blood pressure, decreased fasting serum HDL cholesterol, elevated fasting serum triglyceride level (VLDL triglyceride), impaired fasting glucose, insulin resistance, or prediabetes
Associated conditions include: hyperuricemia, fatty liver (especially in concurrent obesity) progressing to NAFLD, polycystic ovarian syndrome (in women), erectile dysfunction (in men), and acanthosis nigricans.
High Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke
Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.[2] OOn average, obese people have a significantly lower quality of life and greater energy expenditure than their thin counterparts due to the energy required to maintain an increased body mass.[4][5]
RIn 2013 CAD was the most common cause of death globally, resulting in 8.14 million deaths (16.8%) up from 5.74 million deaths (12%) in 1990.[6] Need for prescription medications taken on a regular basis to manage health
Need for special medications to travel in case of emergency (nitro, insulin, sugar tablets)
Difficulty moving or doing exercise.
The Brown Zone ( CHRONIC DISEASE)
Moderate to Severe Obese weight levels
Clinically evident chronic Disease
May need carry special medications for safety
Coronary heart disease
Mind Fog symptoms / Alzheimer’s
Diabetes mellitus type 2
Sleep apnea
Osteoarthritis causing chronic pain
The Black Zone ( CHRONIC DISEASE WITH END-ORGAN COMPLICATIONS / DISABILITY)
Need for assistance when walking or movement (canes, walker, wheelchair)
Needs assistance for Basic Needs / Home Health Nurse
Core Strength weak – Frail
High user of medical insurance and health providers
Likely need for Home Health Assistance or Skilled Nursing Facility
Frequent hospitalizations / Emergency Room visits
